BREEDING

The special foal that already attracts attention through its pedigree, and that, through correctness in conformation and temperament, possesses all the prerequisites for a successful sport horse – that is the goal of breeders. FROZEN PARTNERS aims to help every breeder achieve this.

Whether the horse is later ridden by yourself or presented by a trainer, whether you want to enjoy it yourself or if sales are the priority: FROZEN PARTNERS advises on stallion selection, sharing experience and new scientific findings in breeding. FROZEN PARTNERS is not a sales station; rather, comprehensive service and honest advice are always paramount.

FROZEN SEMEN

Insemination with frozen semen, which, due to the production process and subsequent thawing, has a lower number of progressively motile sperm, carries a significantly higher pregnancy risk than insemination with fresh semen.

Therefore, FROZEN PARTNERS places great importance on proving quality through pregnancies and refrains from using semen with qualities below the minimum sperm count of 30% of the usual initial quantity of 800 million sperm per insemination dose. Quality is determined using a computer-assisted microscope. The risk lies less in the quality of the semen (as it is known that only one sperm needs to find its way), but more in the management of the mare. The veterinarian must determine the optimal time for insemination as precisely as possible; only then is there a chance of pregnancy.

BUILT UP EXPERIENCE
AND SUCCESS OVER TIME

Over the years, across various stallions, mares, and veterinarians, FROZEN PARTNERS has achieved a pregnancy rate of approximately 75%.

Mare management is of particular importance when inseminating with frozen semen. Here are some tips from our own experience and that of other successful breeders and veterinarians.

CHECKLIST

for the selection and preparation of broodmares:

  • Previous breeding suitability (number of foals, receptivity, abortions)
  • Statistics of previous inseminations and pregnancies (in writing, number of follicles, specific ovary, other peculiarities)
  • Observation of estrus behavior (regularity, duration)
  • Hormonal behavior during insemination and pregnancies (use of hormonal agents)
  • Basic veterinary examination (uterus, ovaries)
  • Potentially a uterine biopsy if the mare is abnormal or older
  • Swab test, also for maiden mares and/or mares with foals at foot and after every unsuccessful insemination
  • Insemination with frozen semen during foal heat is controversial among veterinarians; not recommended if the postpartum period has not been normal so far
  • Regular ultrasound monitoring of follicle development (statistics here are helpful for detecting ovulation)
  • Despite all technology and medication, as natural as possible! Stimulation by a stallion is better than the use of hormones
  • After confirmed pregnancy, supporting the pregnancy with Altrenogest may be beneficial. Caution with sport horses!
  • Special attention to the selection of the veterinarian (experience with QH, experience with frozen semen, technical equipment, housing conditions, success rates)

The goal of purchasing a breeding dose with frozen semen should be a special foal. You cannot influence the conditions on the stallion’s side, but you can influence the selection and environment of the mare. Therefore, avoid extreme approaches; provide your mare with an environment as close as possible to what she is accustomed to. Do not start too early in the year; many mares may already be in heat, but the weather often prevents pregnancy. It is better to skip a heat cycle if follicle development is not ‘normal’.
